Paget's disease

Disease/Disorder: Osteitis deformans



Common Name: Paget's disease of the bone



Age of onset: people older than 40 years of age.



Duration: will stay with you, unless you get help.



Males/Females/Equal: men have 50% more chance than women do, but most likely will happen if you have some sort of bone cancer.



Cause: Scientists have not identified a cause for Paget's disease. Some do believe it is related to a viral infection in the bone cells. Another cause they believe is it might be a hereditary.



Symptoms: Bone pain, (most common.) Headaches and hearing loss, this occurs if the disease is located in the skull. Pressure on the nerves. Bowing of limb(s) and/ increased size in head. Curvature of spine. Hip pain. Damage to the cartilage in joints.



Prognosis: will happen more to people over 40 and who have some sort of bone cancer.



Treatment options: Doctor may recommend bone-regulating medications. And if disease is serious surgery should take place. After surgery physical therapy.
